Frigates
Sir,—Does anyone really believe two new frigates would deter would-be invaders or that because of our anti-nuclear stance we would be less vulnerable? I, for one, would feel more security for the next generation knowing that the United States and/or Royal Navy were patrolling the Pacific and capable of repelling aggression. Think of the spin-off if we allowed “nuclear-or-not” ships to visit our ports; all those sailors taking shore leave with real money in their pockets! I do not know how many officers and ratings frigates require, but they all have to be fed, clothed and paid, while their effectivness against modern weaponry must be in doubt. Taxpayers are entitled to internal protection with priority given to hospital and social welfare, education, and more police —
not less — to combat crime. Anzacs without A.N.Z.U.S. would fare poorly in a crisis. — Yours, etc.,
M. ROBINSON, June 23, 1989.
