N.Z. ended up in military hole—Nats
The Government’s plans to be more self-reliant in defence had left the country very dependent on Australia, the Acting Leader of the Opposition, Mr Don McKinnon, said yesterday.
The pressure the Government had brought on itself and the Labour Party would cost New Zealand dearly, he said.
He believes that the Government has decided in principle to buy the Anzac frigates from Australia. The Australian Govern-
ment would have made it clear that if New Zealand did not buy the frigates it would mean significantly reduced military cooperation with Australia. “New Zealand has ended up in a military
hole and only Australia can pull us out. They are now about to extract their price for doing so,” he said. "A National Govern-
ment would never have allowed itself to be put into such a vulnerable position and so beholden to Australia,” Mr McKinnon said.
