Deadline nears on aircraft
PA Auckland The Government faces another multimilliondollar defence spending decision by the end of this week, political observers say. It has until Friday to make up its mind on spending $6O million on Air Force training aircraft. It is waiting for detailed costings on the $2.16 billion Anzac frigates project before making a final decision, probably next month.
The aircraft funds, like the funds for frigates, will probably be spent in Australia, the “Sunday Star” reported. The frontrunner for the 18 advanced training aircraft needed to replace worn-out Strikemasters is an Australian-built, Swissdesigned turboprop, the Pilatus PC9. The two big ticket defence items coming up at the same time has created a dilemma for the Government.
