Chch held to draw

Napier City Rovers and Christchurch United produced a goal scoring feast in Napier yesterday when they drew, 4-4, in an eleventh round Air New Zealand soccer league match. United was in front three times during the match but a David Swailes goal 13 minutes from the end earned Napier a deserved share of the points. Steve Sumner opened the scoring for United when he pounced after a corner was not cleared but Napier levelled through Gary Parker and then took the lead when Brian McAllister bent a free kick around the wall to make it 2-1.

United equalised before half-time when Allan Carville shook off Gary Locke to dab the ball home and when a Danny Halligan free kick was deflected by Martin Akers into his own goal United led, 3-2. A powerful Phil Jack-

son drive slipped away from Alan Stroud to make it 3-3 but United looked to have three points when Johan Verweij broke away and lobbed over the advancing keeper, Clive Holmes.

Napier rallied well, however, and with 13 minutes left Swailes collected a cross and beat Stroud to finish an eventful and exciting match. United was without its leading scorer and captain, Keith Braithwaite, who was resting a hamstring injury. United has now slipped to second place on the points table behind Mount Maunganui, which beat Waterside, 2-1, with goals by Greg Little and Declan Edge. Mount Wellington powered back into form with an 8-0 win over Hutt Valley United, which was without its regular goalkeeper, Barry Pickering. His replacement, Robert Geerlings, was

beaten five times by the All White striker, Noel Barkley. To complete a day of high scoring Mark Armstrong hit three goals as Manurewa beat Gisborne, 4-2, and the Waikato striker, David Laws, scored all his team’s goals in its 4-2 win over North Shore.
