Marist-Western Suburbs wins league cup
By JOHN COFFEY Marist-Western Suburbs clinched the Tavendale Cup and moved into the lead in the Canterbury rugby league premiership when it beat Kaiapoi, 2310, at the Addington Show Grounds last evening. It seemed as if MaristWestern would be in for a prolific night when it ran in four tries in just 14min of the first half. Kaiapoi, competitive early and briefly in front,
had little resistance after Logan Edwards began Marist-Western’s points spree by spectacularly scoring from his teammate, Bryce Nicholson’s, up-and-under. But Marist-Western was not to add another point over the final 50min. The only addition in the second half was Brad Stringer’s try for Kaiapoi. Edwards was decisively the “man of the match” before limping from the field after 65min, and
Tony Wildermoth, Peter de Goldi and Ricky Flavell were particularly effective in the opening spell. It was the second, brave second half effort by Kaiapoi in three days. Last Sunday it similarly dried up Addington’s reservoir of points-scor-ing. The championshipholder, Halswell, is in danger of missing the semi-finals after losing 2612 to Eastern Suburbs in
the other game. Eastern is equal fourth with a game in hand. Michael Culley, the Eastern loose forward, was largely responsible for his side’s highest score this season, claiming three tries and three goals and doing a full share of defensive work. Only in the second quarter was Halswell a winning prospect, drawing up from 2-16 to 12-16. But Shane Te Huia darted across for an Eastern try
14min after half-time and Culley consigned Halswell to a third straight loss with his third tbuch-down. Details.— Marist-Western 23 (Logan Edwards, Mike Howse, Kelvin Remi, Phil Wildermoth tries; Bryce Nicholson three goals; Edwards field goal) beat Kaiapoi 10 (Glen Turton, Brad Stringer tries; Stringer goal). Half-time, 23-6. Man of match, Edwards. Referee, Mr Tommy Lightfoot. Eastern 26 (Michael Culley three, Terry Hermansson, Shane Te Huia tries; Culley
three goals) beat Halswell 12 (Colin Tennant, Aaron Whittaker tries; Whittaker, Paul Dunn goals). Half-time, 16-12. Man of match, Paul Crichton (Halswell). Referee, Mr Ken Blackler. Points after 11 rounds.—
