France tests fourth bomb

PA Wellington France has exploded its fourth underground nuclear bomb this year, at Fangataufa, in the Tuamotu archipelago in French Polynesia. The 70-kiloton explosion occurred at 5.30 a.m. NZST yester-

day, said Dr Warwick Smith, of the D.S.I.R.’s Geophysics Division.

The explosion was recorded on the D.S.I.R.’s seismograph at Rarotonga.

The number of underground tests conducted in this region is now 107.

This year, an 11 kiloton bomb was exploded on May 11, a two kiloton bomb on May 20 and a 20 kiloton bomb on June 4.

Dr Smith said the testing pattern for bombing in the area usually followed two series of four tests each year.
