Dr Metcalf was born in Dunedin. He had been Bishop of the Full Gospel Mission at the sect’s headquarters at Camp David for 15 years. , The group first came to the attention of the public in the mid-1970s when the police raided its headquarters and seized about 140 weapons. The property was again raided in 1987 in a similar police swoop.
Dr Metcalf was known to be an avid collector of guns and had an impressive collection at Camp David.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday. Sect members yesterday refused to comment on the death of their leader.
