Lights ball back in council court

The Christchurch City Council may have to pay to fix a mistake by its staff that allowed floodlights to be installed against its own regulations. The lights, installed at the Edgeware and Spreydon tennis clubs to allow night-time play, are annoying residents. In both cases the lighting poles contravene the council’s District Planning Scheme. The town planning committee has decided to

seek a report on the cost of making the lights conform. The committee chairman, Cr Rex Arbuckle, said: "We take people to task and sometimes to court for not adhering to the scheme — now we are not adhering to it ourselves, and there cannot be one law for them and another for us.” The council will also seek discussions with the tennis clubs and the residents to find a solution.
