A.N.Z.U.S.
Sir, —I believe many New Zealanders will find repugnant the recent public statement by the National Party leader, Jim Bolger, that he has implicit faith and trust in American governments, but no trust at all in our own. ' When it comes to trustworthiness, the track record of the United States is murky, indeed, and for Mr Bolger to say that American troops fought to defend New Zealand in World War II is ludicrous; without Pearl Harbour there would have been no American involvement. If Mr Bolger persists in his policies of subservience to the United States, I venture to suggest he may be in for a shock at our next General Election from the majority of New Zealand citizens who value our independence and nuclear-free status. Mr Bolger may yet need all the support he can get from the Anderton faction! — Yours, etc., R. L. PLUCK. May 29, 1989.
