South Africa

Sir,—Answering J. Wilkinson (May 26), black South Africans have suffered a state of emergency for hundreds of years, irrespective of official (gazetted) notification of enforcement and/ or lifting of a state of emergency to suit a whim. In correspondence (March 21) with the Christchurch Hart office, the New Zealand Minister of Foreign Affairs (Mr Marshall) referred to “the ad hoc Advisory Committee on Southern Africa.” As J. Wilkinson comments on “his committee on South Africa,” I would like clarification of her comment. Past contributions by J. Wilkinson to these columns leave me with the impression that even if all the members of the committee had been to South Africa, she would still come up with comments that (ultimately) highlight her own failings.— Yours, etc., KENNETH EBER MARTIN. May 30, 1989.
