Early release for report

A long-awaited report from an inquiry into Ward 24 at Christchurch Hospital will be released to the news media and some staff today, but its contents will not be made public until next Wednesday.

The head of the inquiry, Dr Les Ding, would present the report at the first meeting of the new Canterbury Area Health Board, said the board’s acting general manager, Mr Ron Parker, yesterday.

The inquiry was set up by the Canterbury Hospital Board after a Tele-

vision New Zealand “Frontline” programme alleged mishandling of child sexual abuse cases in the ward. Mr Parker said he had decided to let the media have the 60-page report early so it could digest it, but the report was to the board and should be presented at the meeting.

He said he was “trusting the media to not break the embargo.” Copies of the report would also be given to the medical superintendent-in-chief and to the head of Ward 24, said Mr Parker.
