Police trace movements

The last movements of the missing Taita schoolgirl, Karla Cardno, have been traced to within “a matter of feet” from where her abandoned bicycle was found, the police said yesterday. Karla disappeared soon after 7 p.m. on Friday after visiting the Taita shopping centre to buy a newspaper and drink. About 7.5 p.m., Karla ran into a video games parlour. The distressedlooking girl hid in a corner before leaving.
Her bicycle was found 25 minutes later, together with the shopping, about 150 m from the shops. Detective Senior-Ser-geant John Marsden confirmed last evening that the police had traced Karla’s movements after leaving the video parlour to within feet of where the bicycle was found.
Details and a sketch plan would be released
today, he said. Karla, aged 13, travelled along the roads and alleyways after leving the parlour, covering some 400 m to 500 m to where the bicycle was recovered.
He would not give more details of her movements. Detective Senior-Ser-geant Marsden said police search and rescue personnel continued the search of remote areas in the Hutt Valley without success.
Efforts to find the young man last seen talking to Karla as she crossed the road towards the shops have so far been fruitless.
“I am now very concerned that this person has not come forward despite all the publicity,” Detective Senior-Sergeant Marsden said.
‘lt is leading us to believe he may be involved to a greater degree than we thought in the early stages of the inquiry.
