Balance making big impact

The highly-promising stayer Balance could make an instant impact in open ranks when he contests the $20,000 Lion Brown Cup (2060 m first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Wanganui Jockey Club’s Meeting at Wanganui tomorrow. The Te Rapa-trained four-year-old has made great strides this year. He was still a maiden in January but has gone on to win five races since then and is to be nominated for the Melbourne Cup.

Balance has shown his best form on left-handed tracks and as a result, he has made several successful raids to the Central Districts in recent months. He was a winner at Trentham in January and his latest success was in a class two weight-for-age contest at Wanganui on April 29 when he won easily. He has had just one start since then, finishing a moderate fifth on a soft track at Te Rapa on May 20. He is likely to strike a soft track again this week-end and that could be his biggest hurdle. All of his wins have been on firm or easy tracks though he has been placed on worse footing. He has been carrying big weights

lately but will drop to just 50.5 kg in his class one debut and will be ridden by Roy McKay. If he can cope with the footing, he should take beating. Beechwood is another very promising young galloper which has been lightly tried as a stayer. He won over 2000 m at Woodville on May 3 in restricted company, but stepped up to class one at Hawera where he was just pipped by Mister Tee over 1600 m. He should measure up here.

Gatcombe’s Pride indicated with an excellent fourth over 1600 m at Awapuni last start that he was progressing well. He is a class winter galloper but could benefit further with this outing. Just A Star, Tele Myth, Kimberley Road and Apollo King are other chances in an even field.

The double will be completed on the Lion Brown Sprint (1360 m in which Pikeson could return to his best. He is a capable winter sprinter and should appreciate the drop in distance. Northern visitor Mickey’s Town must be respected while Chad, Sea Prince and Charvet are all solid performers.
