N.Z. to pursue whaling curbs

New Zealand will press for scientific whaling to be kept within “strict limits based on scientific needs” when the International Whaling Commission meets in San Diego this month. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Marshall, said this stance was in line with New Zealand’s traditionally strong conservationistv position on whaling.

Working groups of the commission will meet from June 5 to June 11, the plenary session from June 12 to 16. New Zealand’s delegation will be led by its commissioner to the commission, Mr lan

Stewart, who was its chairman from 1985-88. The commission introduced a moratorium on commercial whaling in 1986, with provision for whaling countries to apply to it for permission 'to undertake “scientific whaling research.” There had been international criticism for the large annual "scientific whaling” Japan undertook without securing the commission’s permission, but since 1986 the moratorium has been accepted and complied with by all “commercial whaling" countries.

Mr Marshall said the June meeting would be the last one before a commission review conference next year.
