Quake jolts the south

PA Wellington A big earthquake which shook the southern areas of the South Island at 5.55 p.m. yesterday measured between 6.6 and 6.7 on the Richter scale, scientists said. The earthquake was felt strongly in Te Anau, Fiordland and Invercargill, where it caused power cuts. No reports of any damage have been received.

A lecturer in geophysics at Otago University, Dr Peter Koons, said the earthquake was a “very serious one.”
