New drought package for east coast

A new drought package for the east coast of the South Island was in the hands of the Minister of Agriculture, Mr Moyle, last evening. He plans to take it to the Cabinet meeting scheduled for Tuesday next week. The Government announced its “Carry On” package of up to $36 million for the drought-stricken region three months ago. But a spokesman for Mr Moyle said yesterday that the package had not worked, and it had been redrafted. “The farmers never took it up and the rural financiers never took it up in the way it had been hoped,” he said.
