Pressure on jet decision
PA Wellington The Government is under pressure to decide on replacements for the Strikemaster jet trainer by the end of next month, the Minister of Defence, Mr Tizard, says. The tender prices already lodged were only valid to June 30, he said after a caucus briefing on defence and the Anzac frigates.
The 16 Strikemasters have to be replaced earlier than planned because of stress problems.
Mr Tizard said the Strikemaster replacement could go ahead with the purchase of two new frigates over the remaining 12 years of the present 15year Defence budget plan, but there would be little left over for anything else.
He briefed the Labour caucus on Tuesday on the Anzac frigate project and how it fitted in with other Defence equipment projects.
