The rainbow warrior
NZPA-Reuter London A trout called Tiddies has been banned from a British aquarium after leaping into a neighbouring tank and devouring six piranhas — the world’s most ferocious freshwater fish. The razor-toothed piranhas — the prize attraction at the aquarium in Watchet, Somerset — were no match for Tiddies, a hefty four kg rainbow trout. He downed six of the 17 in the tank before staff scooped him out.
“At £lO ($39) a time Tiddies had a pretty expensive fish supper,” the aquarium’s director, Ms Sarah Griffiths, said. The “Guinness Book of Records” lists piranhas, which come from the sluggish waters of large South American rivers, as the fiercest freshwater fish.
But Chris Cheswright, of the Federation of British Aquatic Societies, said, “Piranha are small fish and would have been stunned by a whopping trout landing in their midst. They can be surprisingly timid.”
