Hunger protest

PA Wellington Francis Shaw, of Porirua, facing charges of causing grievous bodily harm, has threatened to igo on a hunger strike unless his case is heard on a marae. In a statement read to journalists outside the District Court yesterday by his lawyer, Mr Moana Jackson, Shaw said his rights under the Treaty of Waitangi were that he could be tried under rangatiratanga (Maori law). Shaw said he would never agree to being heard in a pakeha court. “It will be rangatiratanga or

nothing,” he said. “If my rights to rangatiratanga are not granted I will have no choice but to hunger-strike.” Shaw has been held in custody since early May and has been before the Court five times. The appearances have been marked by protests and hakas. In an apparent move to avoid further disruption his was the first case called at the District Court at Porirua yesterday morning. At two earlier court appearances, supporters of Shaw have launched into a haka.
