Canty Country wins
Canterbury Country shattered Southland Country’s expectations by winning, 41-20, in a representative rugby fixture at Riverside yesterday. Canterbury Country made the most of early possession to lead 25-6 at half-time but Southland Country struck back in the second half winning good lineout ball and touching down three tries. Richard Ewins, the Canterbury Country No. 8, had a sound game while Southland’s fullback, Todd, made considerable ground with his kicks. Scorers: Canterbury Country 41 (R. Ewins, G. Jones 2, S. Gunn, S. Clarke, M. Nevin tries; P. Fitzpatrick four conversions, three penalties) beat Southland Country 20 (D. Hodgson, M. Weller, M. Shallard, tries, E. Todd conversion, penalty; Laidlaw drop goal).
