Police patrols

Sir, —I recently watched a television news item where in a town in the North Island the policeman involved kept a strong profile in the town by walking the streets daily, talking to the shopkeepers, shoppers, children, etc., and proving to be an effective form of patrolling. My children only know the police in our town as heads that drive around in white and blue cars. Should they not see them regularly in the play parks, schools, kindergartens, etc.? As a child I felt a certain amount of security in the knowledge that I, along with many others, could stop and talk to our local police without a moment’s hesitation. Could we not try the more tried-and-true method one more time — "the bobby on the beat"?—Yours, etc. JANENE MAGUIRE. Rangiora, April 17, 1989.
