Australian top racers entrants
Two of Australian’s most renowned off-road motorcycle competitors, Geoff Ballard and Brooke Flanagan, are confirmed entrants for the Shell Challenge 100 race this week-end. The Shell-Oil-sponsored event carries total prize money of over $4500, making it the richest of its type in New Zealand. It will be held on Saturday, April 29, on the Dalethorpe Station, south of Springfield. Course planner, John Sutherland, believes that even the Australian highfliers will be tested to the limit by the event. In parts the course follows a track barely a tyre-width wide skirting a
hillside; in others the riders will weave their way across 200-hectare paddocks through chesthigh tussock. If they had the time they could marvel at the vista of the surrounding mountains, and the Canterbury Plains spread far below. Shell’s Retail Manager for the South Island, David Birt, welcomes news of the Australian entry. “Both are worldclss riders, with several Australian championships between them. Ballard has also scored many international successes. The locals will find him hard to beat.”
