Board calls for museum plans

The Christchurch City Architect is to be asked to start working drawings for stage two of the Canterbury Museum restoration. Canterbury Museum Trust Board members recently voted to make the request so that tenders could be called in September'. The board will also start to raise a loan of up to $600,000 to finance the rest of the stage two costs. Stage two, which is estimated to cost $904,700, includes an additional first floor above the Victorian Village to provide an extra 1200 sq m of

display space. The museum’s director, Mr Michael Trotter, said it was planned to use the floor for zoology displays. Stage two work will include making the Canterbury Village into a bigger display of the European settlement. The money for stage two will 1 come from the restoration fund, a Lottery Board grant and the loan. The restoration appeal total stands at $1,550,976 which does not include the $200,000 promised by the Lottery Board. The appeal target is $3 million.
