Reduction in market stock

A short killing week led to smaller yardings of prime stock and a much reduced demand from buyers at the Addington market yesterday. Two-tooths dominated the prime sheep section but attracted only a limited demand from buyers. Prices dropped about $3 on last week as a result. Lambs also dropped about $2 with the short weeks being responsible for the fall in demand. Few prime cattle were yarded in response to the shortened week and prices seemed to increase as a result. Few pens of quality stock were offered. Prime iambs Lamb prices reached $4O yesterday, the highest price for several months. Only one ram lamb from J. W. Adams, of Kaiapoi, reached the top price but four others from the same vendor made $29.80, also a high price compared with sales since spring. In spite of the few strong sales, the lamb market over all dropped about $1 to $2 on last week. The short killing week meant a lower demand from buyers. About 1400 lambs were yarded, compared with 1720 last week. Values were: Heavy lambs, $lB to $22 with odd sales to $25 and exceptional sales to $4O. Medium lambs, $l5 to $lB. Light lambs, $l2 to $l5. One big two-tooth buyer in recent weeks was absent from yesterday’s sale. Prices for top two-tooths subsequently fell $2 to $3 on last week. The smaller number of old ewes met with easier selling but remained only at last week’s levels. A total of 2100 sheep were offered, compared with 3184 last week.

The few pens of better quality animals met a good demand. Top steers made $2.20 to $2.25 a kg and medium steers and heavy heifers sold at $2.10 to $2.15. Smaller stock sold at $2.05 to $2.10 a kgOnly 192 cattle were yarded, compared with 450 last week. Sales included.— Steers: M. P. H. Prime pigs A small yarding of gener-

ally good quality pigs had a sound sale. All types of pig met a steady inquiry with top baconers selling to $lBO and top quality porkers $5 stronger at $l2O. Choppers also sold steadily at last week’s rates with good cutting sows making to $l9O and the best boars to $206. Weaners also had a sound sale with the best pigs making to $4O and the large stores $7O. Few pigs sold under $3O. Store sheep Little demand was shown for a small number of store lambs and prices dropped about $2 on last week. Most of the yarding compromised light "hungry" lambs with a line from Emu Plains a notable exception. Many sales were made at $5 to $9. Few quality lines of adult sheep were offered and most sales were made at $8 to $lO. Two-tooths met a very poor demand from buyers. Sales included.— Lambs: Emu Plains (Waiau), 265 Corriedale ewes at $16.25 to $16.75; D. P. and P. J. Graham (Tai Tapu), 372 mixed sex at $5.40 to $9.20. Ewes: T. E.
