Tree planting

Sir,—P. M. Jacobson’s letter on farm trees was very correctly rebuffed by D. T. Archbold (April 10). The Minister of Forests also notes something amiss (April 11). Farmers are not planting trees, (hey are cutting

them for cash to pay for Govern-ment-sponsored usury. Very soon I expect to see the usual winter letters suggesting how many newborn lambs died needlessly because farmers do not plant shelter. Dr Nell Cherry’s promotion of irrigation and trees has also struck a sour note in the farming community. Having planted thousands of trees and installed irrigation, both of which are giving increasing production benefits, it should be noted that Government policy has written off these assets but not the debt, not to mention deliberately destroying the Income that serviced the debt. Would critics and promoters like to invest more than $lOO,OOO and see that investment artificially written down to $13,000 on their 1988 Government valuation? I suggest they would not bother.—Yours, etc.,

JOHN McCASKEY. April 12, 1989.
