National Party
Sir,—The most recent poll confirms what people everywhere are saying. Winston Peters is the preferred Prime Minister for New Zealand. The National Party’s refusal to recognise this obvious fact can only mean one of two things: The National Party
is hopelessly out of touch with people and continues to arrogantly ignore their wishes, or National is race-conscious and refuses to appoint Mr Peters as leader because he is of Maori descent. Mr Peters has dignity, charm and unlimited, proven ability. He sees people as important. He is a man in jvhom people have confidence. National’s high rating in the polls is owing in full measure to the confidence people have in Mr Peters. The high-handed view of the party “we know best” will no longer wear. If National is serious about winning the next election it will place Mr Peters where he belongs — leader of the National Party. — Yours, etc., I. J. CUNNINGHAM. April 7, 1989.
