Chatham Islands

Sir, —The Chatham Islands County Council deputy chairman. Pat Smith (with whom I usually disagree sharply), is absolutely right to voice the islanders’ collective disgust at the setting up of yet another Government committee to review the Chatham Islands. While this repetitive and expensive form of procrastination continues, it creates a climate of uncertainty in which investment and development will be discouraged. Further, the islands’ immediate and long-term needs are being neglected. Our supply ship, Holmdale, is overdue for replacement and is beyond its economic life. A decision to replace, taken in time, could even have saved the unfortunate W.E.C.O. shipyard and many much-needed jobs in Whangarei.—Yours, etc., R. L. CLOUGH. April 10, 1989.
