Missing ‘jurors’ sought
PA Napier About 50 people who failed to appear for High Court jury service earlier this week could find themselves in front of a judge on Friday to explain their absence. The Napier Court’s manager, Mr Henry Hatton, said yesterday their circumstances were being investigated by the police. If explanations were unsatisfactory, they could be called before the judge, who can fine each up to $3OO. They come from 1000. people summoned for service during a trial relating to a fatal gang confrontation in Wairoa last year.
Some of the 1000 are dead, some have left the country and a large number successfully sought exemption. Those being questioned either did not appear or failed as required by law to seek exemption if they were unable to attend.
