Renovations reveal names
The head of the history department at Christ’s College, Mr Don Hamilton, points out a signature of a former pupil uncovered on a wall during renovations at the college. N. Blackburne was one of a group of names from about 1908 that were uncovered during work oh the school’s library. N. Blackburne, who was at the
school from 1902 to 1907, served as a corporal during World War I and later became a farmer at Tauranga. Of 16 names that Mr Hamilton has checked against the school roll 14 served in the war. Three were killed. Of the 13 remaining one died in
1913, aged 22, eight became farmers, one a merchant, one a company secretary, one a doctor, and one served in the British Army in. India. The wall which carried the names of several pupils was panelled over in 1910. The names will be photographed before the wall is demolished.
