Timaru petition rejects reforms

A petition presented to Parliament yesterday showed that South Canterbury people rejected a proposal that would mean “domination by Christchurch,” according to the member of Parliament for Timaru, Mr Maurice McTigue.

Mr McTigue presented the 20,000-signature petition which calls for the formation of a central South Island region based on Timaru and rejects the Local Government Commission’s draft recommendation that South Canterbury be included in the Canterbury region.

Mr McTigue said that the petition showed a complete rejection of the Government’s local body reforms.

“Twenty thousand people — or 53 per cent of those eligible to vote between the Rangitata River and the Waitaki River — have clearly said to the Government, ‘we reject your proposal to force Government from Christchurch on us’,” Mr McTigue said.
