R.N.Z.A.F. quiet on pilot issue

PA Wellington The R.N.Z.A.F. said yesterday it had no comment on a recommendation by the Royal Australian Air Force to import pilots from New Zealand and other countries to overcome shortages in Australia. A Ministry of Defence spokesman said the R.N.Z.A.F. had itself recruited personnel from overseas. “We have imported pilots from the air forces of other countries to meet specific skill requirements to make up a shortfall in specialist areas. “Additionally, we have been experiencing a steady flow of applications for entry from

overseas air force personnel seeking service and permanent residence in New Zealand,” he said. The spokesman refused to comment on whether the Ministry was aware of any active recruitment by the R.A.A.F. in New Zealand. A report from Canberra on Tuesday said a senior R.A.A.F. officer had, confirmed it was looking at “lateral recruitment from other air forces,” such as Britain, Canada, New Zealand and other Commonwealth countries. The move was one of 19 recommendations in an internal R.A.A.F. report prepared by Group Captain Nick Ford to look at ways to combat officer resignations.
