Cot-death run teams arrive
New Zealand Army soldiers on a fund-raising run between Picton and Bluff arrived in Christchurch yesterday to be welcomed by a magic spell and a Maori challenge. Two eight-men teams left Picton at 6 a.m. on Monday on a charity run to raise, money for the Canterbury Cot Death Fellowship Appeal. The runners arrived in Cathedral Square yesterday accompanies by the St Andrew’s College Pipe Band. The Wizard then cast a good luck spell to make all those gathered give generously before the Burnham Maori culture group issued a challenge to the runners. So far the run has raised about $lO,OOO, with organisers hoping to raise $50,000 by the end of the run in Bluff. The Cot Death Research Appeal has raised about $250,000 since it was launched in May last year. Runners have been training hard for the run, attending special exercise sessions in the morning and going for two runs a day. The soldiers left yesterday afternoon for Ashburton.
