Mare cruises to equal record in win at trials

By

JEFF SCOTT

A stiff easterly breeze was not enough to prevent Cool Charm Girl from equalling the New Zealand mares’ record for 2600 m from a stand in her final serious work for Saturday’s D.B. Cheviot Cup at the Addington trials yesterday.

“She needed a good blowout,” said the mare’s trainer, Steve O’Brien, who was caught by surprise when informed Cool Charm Girl’s 3:18.7 equalled Gina Rosa’s mark in a race at Addington two years ago. Camelot holds the entires’ and geldings’ New Zealand record at 3:16.9. “I should have tapped her up being that close,” quipped O’Brien, who did not require Cool Charm Girl to lengthen out over the closing stages. At the line, she was cruising four lengths clear of two race rivals on Saturday in High Gun (travelling well) and Noodlum’s Fella. Cool Charm Girl, which began swiftly from the 40m mark yesterday, led over the last 1200 m, running her last 800 m in 59.8. O’Brien says the Smooth Fella mare was not at her best for last month’s D.B. Draught Easter Cup at Addington, when she led and wilted to finish seventh. If she satisfies her trainer again at Rangiora on Saturday, O’Brien is toying with the idea of taking Cool Charm Girl north for the Auckland Great Northern Derby meeting, which starts on Saturday week. The feature event there is the $lOO,OOO Securities Corporation Inter-Island Challenge Stakes. Cool Charm Girl, which also won at last week’s Addington trails, starts from 30m behind in Saturday’s C 5 and faster Cheviot Cup over 3200 m, and will start one of the favourites after yesterday’s performance. O’Brien is not con-

cerned that she has failed in her two outings on grass surfaces to date. “She did not get a run over the closing stages in her first race on grass, and the next time she was in mud up to her hocks,” he said. High Gun, driven by raceday reinsman, Robert Cameron, was not hurried to run second yesterday and he too remains in top order for Saturday. Other Cheviot Cup candidates in Willow Chip and Besta Kara finished fifth and sixth respectively yesterday. The former, after enjoying a good run, wilted over the last 100 m, while Besta Kara, which worked hard in the middle stages to wrest the lead before trailing Cool Charm Girl over the last lap, should improve on that effort for Saturday according to cotrainer, Kevin Townley. “He is on the way up again and he needed that today,” said Townley. Silver Beam enhanced his prospects for the second leg of the T.A.B. double at the Cheviot meeting, scoring decisively in the C2 and C 3 pace, beating Marmoose by three lengths in 3:28 (2600 m Expression, a form runner for the N.Z. Leonard Memorial for jevenile fillies on Saturday, scored a front-running win in her two-year-old heat over 2000 m in 2:49, quickening from the 800 m in 59.7. ' Jay Bee's Joker impressive Jay Bee’s Joker again impressed for his likely debut at the New Brighton meeting at Addington next

Wednesday by going nearly 10 seconds faster than Expression in the second two-year-old heat. The colt brother to Jay Bee’s Fella (1:55.6) led for most of the run home and was not unduly extended to beat the strong finishing Joe Cool (Smooth Fella—ln Or Out) by a neck, with Imperial Guest, which tried to lead over the last 1200 m half a head away third. Jay Bee’s Joker, driven by Graham Eskdale, a son of the colt’s trainer, Blake Eskdale, returned a creditable 2:39.6 in the blustery conditions, the leaders running their last 800 m in 60.3. Sonorous, shuffled back to last of the eight runners with 500 m left, and Looks The Part, a strong finisher from the third line, were the pick of the CO heat winners yesterday.
