Comalco strike ends
NZPA-Reuter Sydney About 650 workers at Comalco’s Bell Bay aluminium smelter in Tasmania returned to work yesterday after voting to end their strike, the plant’s general manager, Mr Bruce Farmer, said. The strike began as a series of rolling stoppages last Wednesday night about a claim for a disa-
bility allowance after bearded men had to shave to wear new respiratory gear. But management and salaried staff kept the smelter going through the strike. It produces 128,000 tonnes a year. The disability claim will go to negotiation between Comalco and the union involved, Mr Farmer said.
