Overdue climber seen hitch-hiking

One of two overseas climbers due at Fox Glacier a week ago has been seen near Punakaiki, confirming a suggestion by the police that the pair had left the Mount Cook area without telling anyone. Constable Bill Apes, of Lake Tekapo, said last evening that a woman who had crossed from Fox Glacier to Mount Cook with the two men had reporting seeing one of them within the last few days hitch-hiking

near Punakaiki. “That shows that they’re out of the area, but we’d still like to see them just to confirm that they’re all right,” he said. The climbers, Dieter Johan, an Austrian, and Michael Hirnbreck, an Australian, were due at Fox Glacier via the Copland Pass last Wednesday. The police believed the pair had left the area, and they were waiting until the end of this week before mounting a search.
