Rambling Man on best behaviour

The well-bred colt, Rambling Man, took his first step in from the cold when he won his heat at the Ashburton trials yesterday. The Shy Rambler chestnut was placed on the schooling list at the recent Ashburton meeting after again holding up the start for a considerable period, and, on that occasion, being a late scratching. Rambling Man had
trialed before stipendiary steward, Bruce Craik, at trials two weeks ago but had again given trouble before going into his stall. Yesterday he caused practically no delay and after disputing the pace came away to win his heat easily. It is not all over yet for •the half-brother to Royal Adder however. Mr Craik will require Rambling Man to trial satisfactorily at least once more before giving the
horse a clearance to race. Trainer Ray Pankhurst had been hoping the horse would be taken off the schooling list before the Nelson meeting next week.
Silver Pal, a member of the Williams stable, won the two-year-old heat well after running greenly in the straight. He was riden by Richard Tullet who is on loan to Dawn and Peter Williams for a month from the Prender-
gast stable. Regal Manor won the “battle of the lightweights” in the other catchweight heat, the grey, with Katrina Ramsay up, holding out Lady Tyack (Stephanie Clark). Red Digger led all the way in his maiden heat but Raymond Bruce had to ask him for an effort over the final stages to hold out Careless Whisper. Red Digger appeared to be feeling the track which was very firm.
