Couple relieved son is safe

An Australian couple will return to their flooddevastated town in northern New South Wales today, relieved that their son, aged 19, is safe and well.

Des and Marion Toms received word in Christchurch yesterday that their son, Matthew, had made it safely to their home in Lismore after being caught in floods in parts of Queensland and northern New South’ Wales, which have claimed several lives.

“He had been travelling with a band in the back country around Lismore,” said Mr Toms. “The flood is as bad as in 1974. We have been worried about him ever

since we heard the news.” Mr and Mrs Toms have been holidaying in New Zealand for the last 10 days and expect to be stranded in Brisbane for a few days until roads to Lismore reopen.

"Our house will be all right. It is on a hill. If they say the flood is as bad as it was 15 years ago, the water will be up to the second floor of some buildings. “The floods we get are devastating. Lives are always lost. People try to cross flooded creeks and get washed away in their cars,” said Mr Toms. “The mopping up is always horrendous. But everybody rallies around,” he said.
