U.S. ‘snub’ shows mistrust—Burdon
The snub by the VicePresident of the United States, Mr Dan Quayle, is a reflection of the true nature of the relationship between New Zealand and the United States, said the Opposition spokesman on trade and industry, Mr Philip Burdon. “Clearly the Government is neither trusted nor respected by the United States,” said Mr Burdon. “This response of our traditional friends, such
as the United States, is the ultimate indictment of the failure of the Government’s foreign policy. “It makes a mockery of the soothing noises which the Prime Minister, Mr Lange, and the Minister of Overseas Trade and Marketing, Mr Moore, continue to parade about,” he said. Australian newspapers have reported as a snub Mr Quayle’s plan to visit Australia in May without making a visit to New Zealand.
