AUSTRALIA Options predominate

NZPA-AAP Sydney Australian stocks continued to slide yesterday afternoon as investors focused on options and futures-related trading. By the close of trading the all ordinaries index had fallen 9.3 points to 1457.7. Brokers said the overall lack of interest in the national market other than for options reflected the gloomy interest rate outlook and depressed base metal prices. They said stocks in most sectors, particularly the interest rate-sensitive banks, suffered from the infusion of bearish sentiment.

The all industrials index fell 12.4 points to 2402.5 and the all resources 6.8 to 749.1. Softer bullion prices saw the gold marker slump 20.7 to 1499.6.

National turnover, which was mostly optionsrelated, was a healthy 105.10 million shares worth sAust2sl.2lM. Declines exceeded rises by about 12 to 7. BTR Nylex, down 24c at 890 as 2.53 M shares

traded, was the worst performer in the industrial sector. News Corp lost 20c to 1165, Amatil 12c to 928 and CSR 2c to 401 as 4.09 M shares changed hands. Adsteam fell 4c to 640 while TNT was steady at 318. Hudson Conway lost one cent to 117 as 1026 M shares or 4.57 per cent of issued capital traded in three special sales at 115 each amid concern about its brewing business after radical changes to the British industry. Elders IXL, which owns 30 per cent of Hudson, fell 3c to 263. BHP slipped 2c to 760 after posting a nine-month profit of sAust742.BM with a one-for-10 bonus share issue. Rothmans put up a strong display, jumping 20c to 980. Brambles was also ahead, 5c at 1135, and Victorian Equity Trust 6c at 92 as 16.03 M shares or 2.9 per cent of capital changed hands. Insurance stocks were weak with FAI down 4c at 254 and QBE lc at 499. Among the banks.
