Decision reserved over ship
NZPA Sydney A New South Wales Supreme Court judge has reserved his decision on an application to extend a cross claim against the Marlborough Harbour Board and the board’s pilot, Captain Don Jamison, over the sinking of the Soviet cruise ship Mikhail Lermontov in the
Marlborough Sounds in 1986.
If upheld, the cross claim from Baltic Shipping Co. and C.T.C. Cruises could result in the board being liable for both passengers’ damages and the value of the ship.
The hearing on the application to amend the cross claim took two days
and Judge Kenneth Carruthers said he would treat the matter “expeditiously” to avoid any further delays to the hearing to determine liability set for April 24.
About 150 Australian passengers are suing B.S.C. and C.T.C. for loss of luggage when the ship sank.
