Man fails to face molotov charges
A warrant was issued in the District Court yesterday for the arrest of a man who was to have faced a preliminary hearing on charges arising from incidents during which a molotov cocktail was allegedly thrown. The defendant, Ronald Jacob Te Amo, aged 45, unemployed was to have appeared for the hearing of depositions of evidence on six charges. They were two charges of wilfully trespassing on the premises of the Bower Tavern after having been warned by the assistant manager, Stanley George Sturgess, to stay away, and charges of unlawfully possessing a restricted weapon (a molotov cocktail) in the public bar of
the Bower Tavern; throwing a molotov cocktail at Constable Stephen Lurejad with intent to injure him; assaulting Constable Lurejad, using a molotov cocktail as a weapon; and unlawfully having a knife in the public bar of the Bower Tavern.
The charges related to January 20. Messrs C. W. Crawford and A. L. Mclvor, Justices of the Peace, issued a warrant for Te Amo’s arrest.
This had been sought by the prosecutor, Sergeant Kevin Morrison.
Te Amo had been on bail, opposed by the police, with conditions which included that he live at a specified address, observe a nightly
curfew, and not go within 200 m of the Bower Tavern.
Te Amo had failed to appear in court on two other occasions this month. They were on March 16 and two unrelated charges of trepassing at the Bower Tavern, and committing a breach of bail conditions, and a breach of a periodic detention sentence; and on March 23, on traffic charges.
His counsel, Mr Colin Eason, said he had had no contact with Te Amo for at least a month, and no explanation for his failure to attend yesterday. Mr Eason was given permission to withdraw from the case.
