Tuition fees
Sir, —I would like to know where you .received your information (February 21) about "weekly income for a teacher being $690,” mentioned in a front page article, “Tuition bills as user-pays hits students?” Even If this sum was before tax it would still be an amount above my paltry $416 a week. (I have been teaching more than 11 years and far from a beginning wage, I hope.) Teaching is a “love job” — certainly, the financial side is not a drawcard. Ask any teacher in the primary service how much money Is spent on books, felt pens, stars, card for displays, courses — a voluntary subsidy to our "free” education system now that we can claim back for nothing on our tax forms. I would like to know how many parents realise this? — Yours, etc DENISE BURROW. February 23, 1989, [This letter was referred to the Associate Minister of Finance, Mr Goff, for comment, but none has been received.]
