Community councillors

Sir,—it is disappointing to read last Thursday that Citizens intend to put forward candidates for the community ward councillor positions in the October local government elections. Community ward councillors will be a new tier of elected representatives in the greater Christchurch council. They are intended to increase community involvement in local government by representing the interests of specific localities in Christchurch. Genuine independents put forward by ratepayers’ associations and neighbourhood groups are the appropriate candidates for these positions. Political parties have no place in this tier of local government Their first concern would not be to promote the grassroots interests of local communities. Their Involvement at this level would be designed to extend their influence and to promote their ideology. The greater resources of political parties, particularly in the field of organisation and advertising, would make it difficult for independents to be elected. This would not be healthy for the development of local democracy and would undermine community involvement in local government—Yours, etc., HUGH BOWRON, Co-ordinator, Addington Neighbourhood Group.
