Flower cost blooms
Flower prices increased slightly at the flower market this week, after many retailers sold out at Easter week-end. Good quantities and qualities of flowers were available and sold well after the long week-end, one auctioneer said. Gladioli and chrysanthemums were still plentiful and in a variety of colours. Gladioli fetched up to $1.20 to $3 a bunch of five stems, and
chrysanthemums, from $4 a bunch of five stems. Carnations dropped slightly in price, but there were few North Island flowers such as roses, orchids, Alstroemeria, or leucodendrons this week. Orchid plants from Nelson are expected today or tomorrow, and may sell from $l5 to $2O each. West Coast birch was also starting to replace gypsophila as backing for bunches of flowers.
