Addington market Drop in supply

Very small yardings of prime and store stock were offered for sale at the Addington market yesterday because of the short killing week.

The numbers offered for sale were in stark contrast to last week’s over-supplied preEaster market. In spite of the large drop in numbers, prices were, at best, only able to return to levels of two weeks ago as buyer demand was also greatly reduced. Buyers in some sections still had stock on hand from last week. Prime lambs

Lambs fully regained the $2 drop of last week with buyers showing a good demand for large butchers’ type animals. Although the top prices were similar to last week more sales were made at these levels. The rise particularly benefited light to medium lambs which had been oversupplied in recent weeks. The yarding was 801 compared with 1426 last week. Valnp<» were* Heavy lambs, $22 to $27.80. Medium lambs, $lB to $2l. Light lambs, $l5 to $l7. Sales included: Coesford Farm (Irwell), 24 at $12.40 to $25.60; W. H. Cederman (Oxford), 126 at $17.20 to $21.80; L. G. and H. G. Brittan (Dunsandel), 96 at $16.80 to $21.40; Blank Brothers (Yaldhurst), 30 at $21.20 to $27.80; R. J. Middleton (Springston), 42 at $25 to $27.80. Prime sheep Most types of sheep remained at price levels set at last week’s sale with the continued reduced demand from buyers being matched by a drop in numbers from 2962 last week to 2058 yesterday. Lighter old ewes, probably improved $1 to $1.50 from last week.

Hoggets also continued at last week’s rates with a few sales reaching $18.20.

Values were: Heavy old ewes, $lO to $ll Medium old-ewes, $7 to $9. Light old ewes, $5 to $7. Sales included.—

Old ewes: C. J. Leach and Son (Scargill), 95 at $9 to $11; C. H. Stanbury (Little River), 29 at $8 to $11; J. R. Bulman (Little River), 36 at $7.80 to $9.40; R. J. Turpin (Little

River), 51 at $8.20 to $10.60; E. V. Murray Childerns Trust (Scargill), 85 four tooths at $8 to $9.80; B. I. and H. Thompson (Summerhill), 17 at $8 to $10.60; I. D. Lassen (Greenpark), 66 at $17.80 to $18.40; Cascade Farm (Culverden), 36 at $lB to $18.60. Prime cattle Not all butchers were able to fill their orders from the very small yarding of prime cattle offered. The quality of stock was again mixed but prices were able to improve slightly because of the fewer numbers. Bigger steers sold to $2.30 a kilogram with smaller steers and heifers making $2.15 to $2.20 a kg. Just 149 prime cattle were yarded, compared with 437 last week. Sales included.— Steers: M. Lasey (Brookside), 7 at $430 to $462; D. J. Weir (Little River), 1 at $830; Miss K. E. Weir (Little River), 1 at $830; G. W., A. I. and R. J. Smith (Rangiora), 10 at $398 to $416. Heifers: R. Bobby calf prices eased yesterday with most Friesian bulls making $l5 to $6B and heifers selling at $3B to $92. Most beef cross bulls sold at $26 to $76 and heifers at $22 to $4O. A total of 132 bobbies were offered for sale, compared with 149 last week. Dairy cows

Two strong sales of Friesian cows with calves were a feature of the dairy sale yesterday with prices of $522 and $5lO. Other Friesians

with calves sold at $3OO and $420 with a Jersey cross cow and calf selling at $2OO. Store stock Lambs had the better sale out of the small yardings of store stock offered for sale yesterday. The better prices were restricted to the larger lines of stock and most of the yarding comprised small pens of light stock. Most of the adult sheep offered were also light conditioned and prices remained similar to last week’s sale. The brightest part of the sale was a pen of two-tooth and four-tooth Merinos from Mrs J. M. F. Gould, of West Melton, which sold at $62. Sales of store cattle appeared to be stronger than last week but the small number offered made comparisons difficult.

The yardings were: 1477 lambs (2300 last week), 2087 sheep (2500), and 183 cattle (1912). Sales included.— Store lambs: Heathstock Downs (Hawarden), 444 Corriedale ewes at $l3 to $17.50; J. J. Murdock (Kaituna), 415 woolley Romney wethers at $12.50 to $18.75. Store sheep: Coesford Farm (Irwell), 237 Coopworth twotooth ewes at $23 to $24, 432 mixed aged Coopworth ewes at $lO to $l2; S. M. Boon and Son (Dunsandel), 192 Romney cross ewes at $7.25; R. P. and J. M. Gebbie, 339 mixed age Perendale ewes at $5 to $7.75; J. J. Murdock (Kaituna), 70 Romney ewes at $7.75, 69 at $10.25; Mrs J. M. F. Gould (West Melton), 50 Merino two-tooth and fourtooth ewes at $62. Store cattle: I. C. Stanbury (Little River), 75 cows at $246 to $440; R. E. and J. Y. Winterburn (Chorlton), 24 heifer calves at $142 to $l7O. Pigs

Small yardings were entered in both the prime pig and store pig sections. Prices for top baconers reacher $lB2, $2O up on last week’s sale. Choppers also had a big lift in values with top sales making $250, compared with $220 last week. The weaner market began well with sales at last week’s prices but eased a little toward the end of the day.
