Obituary Group Captain R. F. Aitken

PA Wellington Group Captain Russell Faulkner Aitken, an airsea rescue pioneer and former National Safety Association director, of Paremata, died recently. Mr Aitken, aged 76, was a Royal Air Force pilot during World War 11. He left New Zealand in 1935 to seek a short service

with the R.A.F., but ended up remaining in the Force until 1961, serving with distinction throughout. During the Battle of Britain, Mr Aitken worked on air-sea rescue principles which remain in use today and for which he received the A.F.C. in 1941, as well as a mention in dispatches. Born in Outram, Otago,

Mr Aitken returned to New Zealand in 1961 and took up residence in Paremata. From 1975 until his retirement in 1978, Mr Aitken was a consultant to the Accident Compensation Commission, the successor to the National Safety Association. He is survived by his second wife, a daughter and two step-daughters.
