Sea survival course popular

PA Auckland One of the most popular lessons at St Thomas’ Primary School in Kohimarama has pupils diving under an overturned boat. The Okahu Bay Waterwise scheme began teaching youngsters how to survive at sea last month and is now an integral part of the curriculum at St

Thomas’ and six other eastern suburbs schools. Run by three Okahu Bay clubs, the Auckland Sailing Club, Royal Akarana Yacht Club and Auckland R Class Squadron, it is designed to teach water safety skills to children. They are first taught to swim and dive under an upturned dinghy before

progressing to yachts. The Waterwise organiser, Mr Bruce Tantrum, said seven of 18 Optimist class dinghies were in the water and six canoes would be bought to add to the fleet. Teachers and parents involved have been certified competent waterskins advisers by the New Zealand Yachting Federation.
