‘Spy’ named
NZPA-AAP Canberra A Federal Liberal backbencher, Ken Aldred, yesterday named another Soviet diplomat as an Intelligence operative and called for a Royal Commission into Soviet activities in Australia. Mr Aldred said a First Secretary at the Soviet Embassy in Canberra, Y. V. Klopotenko, was a lieu-tenant-colonel in Soviet military Intelligence, the G.R.U.
He told a news conference the Soviet presence was expanding rapidly due to a “very laid back” attitude by the Federal Government. Mr Aldred last year named the second most senior Soviet diplomat in Australia at the time, Valeriy Zemskov, as a special K.G.B. operative and the Sydney representative of the Soviet airline Aeroflot, Vladimir Podshikov, as a G.R.U. officer.
