N.Z. to play Western Aust.
The New Zealand cricket team will play Western Australia at Perth on April 4 in a special match to mark Air New Zealand’s new nonstop Christchurch-to-Perth service.
The 50-over, day-night game at the WACA ground will be for a stake of sAustls,ooo, of which the winner will receive
sAustl 0,000. With the approval of the New Zealand Cricket Council, the New Zealand team for the match will be named by the national selectors (Don Neely, Bob Cunis and Bruce Taylor) after the present series against Pakistan. Live television coverage has been arranged through the Channel 10
network in Australia, and negotiations with Television New Zealand are continuing.
The New Zealand team will leave Christchurch aboard the inaugural flight on April 2, accompanied by a manager, coach and physiotherapist.
Air New Zealand’s regional southern manager,
Mr Paul Bowe, said yesterday the airline was delighted to have such a spectacular launching of its new service. Western Australia has been the most consistently successful state side in recent seasons, with players of the calibre of Graham Marsh, Graeme Wood, Terry Aiderman and Mike Valetta.
