Girl dies in river
A girl died yesterday morning after the car in which she was a passenger plunged into the Heathcote River. She was
Deborah Lee Mazey, aged 16, of Christchurch. Miss Mazey and another girl had allegedly taken a car from Bamford Street, Woolston, about 2 a.m.
The police said the car was driven to the Garlands Road area. The driver lost control of it on the corner of Cumnor Terrace, and it ended up in the river. Miss Mazey was trapped and drowned, but the other girl got out and went for help. The girl has been charged with unlawfully taking a motor vehicle and careless use of a motor vehicle causing death. _
